The boys and I beat the crowd and slid up to the zoo on Friday morning. By crowd, I mean the thousands that turned out Saturday and Sunday for Packy the elephant’s 46th birthday. I actually had no idea all this was happening. We really only wanted to check out the salmon - Jack watched in a trance. To accommodate Leo’s requests, we only needed to see bears and owls. And, oh yeah, “I just want to see an elephant poop,” he said. Happy birthday Packy.

Back when I was studying literature and drama, I stumbled on this line from Tennessee Williams: “Snatching the eternal out of the desperately fleeting is the great magic trick of human existence.” I wrote it down and haven’t really thought about it in years. Thinking about it now, I guess it reflects how I feel about taking pictures.
